Apple iPhone XS and iPhone XS MAX announced at an event held in the Steve Jobs Theater at the company’s new headquarters in Cupertino, California as expected. These are the company’s latest flagship smartphones in the ‘XS’ series. The iPhone XS sports 5.8-inch display and the iPhone XS Max sports a bigger 6.5-inch panel with 458PPI Super Retina HDR displays with support for Dolby Vision and HDR 10, as well as 120Hz touch-sensing. While, the glass on both models is the most durable ever on a smartphone, and the duo feature surgical-grade steel. They have Face ID for unlocking. Apple is also introducing Dual SIM support with dual standby via eSIM that is already available on iPad worldwide for the first time.

Both, these devices are powered by new Apple A12 Bionic chip based on 7nm platform, first in the industry. The chip with 6-core CPU with two performance cores promises 15% fast performance and 40% lower power, and 4 efficiency cores will offer up to 50% lower power compared to A11 Bionic. It has 6.9 billion transistors, can perform 5 trillion operations per second, up from 600 billion in A11. They also have IP68 certification for dust- and water-resistant (up to 2-metres and 30 minutes).

The iPhone XS series smartphones have dual 12 MP camera on the rear, one wide-angle camera (f/1.8 aperture) and the other a telephoto camera (f/2.4 aperture). Both have 6-element lenses, and optical image stabilization, and the former has 1.4-micron pixels and Focus Pixels tech. They also have an improved True Tone flash with a flicker-detection system. It also has Smart HDR that makes use of A12 chip’s AI features. While, on the front side it has a 7 MP camera with f/2.2 aperture, and the IR camera has been improved with a Dot projector for 3D facial detection. Because, Facial land marking will help in reducing red eye instances and in taking a better portrait mode.

The iPhone XS sports a 5.8-inch OLED 458ppi Super Retina HDR display, 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio (typical) 3D Touch with a resolution of 2436 x 1125 pixels.

The iPhone XS sports a 6.5-inch OLED 458ppi Super Retina HDR display, 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio (typical) 3D Touch with a resolution of 2688 x 1245 pixels.

Platform

Bothe devices are powered by Six-core A12 Bionic 64-bit 7nm processor with four-core GPU, M12 motion co-processor and runs on iOS 12.

Storage

The device comes with 64GB, 256GB, 512GB storage options.

Camera

Both devices have dual rear cameras the primary and secondary both are 12MP wide-angle (f/1.8) and telephoto (f/2.4) cameras, Dual optical image stabilization, Optical zoom; Six‑element lens, True Tone flash, 4K video recording at 60 fps, Slo‑mo 1080p at 240 fps.

On the front side it has 7MP front camera with f/2.2 aperture, 1080p video recording, Retina Flash.

Connectivity and Sensors

The device supports 4G VoLTE, WiFi 802.11 ac with MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC with reader mode, GPS with GLONASS. It has Dual SIM (secondary eSIM from select carriers or physical SIM in China) and TrueDepth camera for FaceID facial recognition as well as Stereo speakers.

Battery and Dimensions

The mobile packs Built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery with Qi wireless charging, fast charging, up to 12.3 hours of use in iPhone XS and 13.3 hours of use in iPhone XS Max.

Price and availability

The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max will be available in Gold, silver and Space Gray colors. The starting price for the device is $999.
