Have you ever got any email from an unknown email address? Have you then tried to find the source of the unknown email address? If you have tried to trace email location and failed, then you are at the right place right now. Because, here in this post we are going to share on how to trace the location of an email.
How to trace the location of an email?
Find the IP Address
The first step in the hunt of tracing the location of an email would be to find the IP address of the email. In general, the email applications hide the IP Addresses from the users. However, every email service provider has a hidden option to find the IP Address of any email. You will have to view the email headers in order to get the IP Address.
For Gmail users
To get the email headers in Gmail, hit the arrowhead that is pointing downwards beside the “Reply” button and select “Show original”.
For Hotmail/Outlook users
To get the email headers in Hotmail, click on the “Action” button and select “View Message Source”.
For Yahoo Users
To get the email headers for Yahoo users, click on “Action” button and then click on “View Full Header”.
For AOL Users
To get the email headers in AOL, click on the “Action” button and select “View Message Source”.
Finding the IP Address from the email header
After you get the email header, you will have to find the words such as “Received” or “X-originating-IP:” Those words are usually followed by an IP Address.
Use an IP tracing application
There are many IP tracing apps both web and offline. Some of them are :
http://www.ip-adress.com/ip_tracer/
http://www.geobytes.com/iplocator.htm
http://visualroute.visualware.com/ (use their live demo)
Although you can find the locations from where you are getting emails, the result that you’d get might not be accurate always. Because, the attackers who send tons of emails to destroy the security in email services often use someone else’s IP Address. But following the ways mentioned above is worth a try.
