How to set up Two-factor authentication for Apple ID

When, you created your Apple ID, it was already secured with Apple’s two-step verification method where user gets an four-digit verification code via SMS on the registered mobile number in case they are trying to login. But, this Two-Factor Authentication is an extra layer of security for your Apple ID designed to ensure that you’re the only person who can access your account, even if someone knows your password. Once, you enable the two-factor authentication (2FA), while login into your account a six-digit verification code is sent to all the devices linked to the same Apple ID. In fact, in case of any suspicious login attempt it also display a map with an approximate location on all the devices.

Some Apple IDs created in iOS 10.3 or macOS 10.12.4 and later are already protected with two-factor authentication by default. In this case, you see that two-factor authentication is already turned on. But, in case you had created your Apple ID before these versions, here is the steps to manually enable it.

How to manually upgrade to Two-Factor Verification

  1. Login in Apple ID account page using your Apple ID
  2. Look for Security section on your Account Page and click on the Edit button i.e. on the right side
  3. Click on Turn off two-step verification.

In, case Two-factor authentication is already enabled for your Apple ID, your Apple ID account page will have below setting for Security section.

  • iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 9 and later
  • Mac with OS X El Capitan and iTunes 12.3 and later
  • Apple Watch with watchOS 2 and later
  • Apple TV (4th generation) with tvOS
  • Windows PC with iCloud for Windows 5 and iTunes 12.3.3 and later

Enable Two-factor authentication for iPhone or Macbook using settings

For iPhone/iPad users

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap on [your name]
  3. Tap on Password & Security.
  4. Tap Turn On Two-Factor Authentication.
  5. Tap Continue.
  6. Enter the phone number where you want to receive verification codes when you sign in.
  7. Choose the option to receive the codes by text message or automated phone call.
  8. Tap Next to receive the verification code to the phone number you provided.
  9. Enter the verification code to verify your phone number

For Macbook users

  1. Go to Apple menu
  2. Click on System Preferences and then click on iCloud option
  3. Click on Account Details and then click on Security
  4. Click Turn On Two-Factor Authentication and press continue
  5. Make sure your entered phone number is correct
  6. Click on Continue

Along with many other features the Apple ID Account Page, also offers user an option to delete or deactivate your Apple account.
