Apple macOS under security threat again, another password prompt can be bypassed with any password

Apple macOS under security threat

According to MacRumors, there is a bug which affects the present version of macOS High Sierra. You can unlock the App Store Preference under the System Preferences using any password. The company has already fixed a bug in the beta versions of the upcoming macOS High Sierra update.

For a company that promotes heavily on its security measures, this is a huge blow as it is the second time in the past few months that an issue of this regard has put the Apple under scanner. Apple has already apologized for not being transparent with the customers on slowing down the performance of the older iPhones.

If you have any Apple desktop that runs on macOS High Sierra, you can test this bug. Go to System Preferences and then open App Store settings and look at the padlock icon. If it’s unlocked first, try unlocking it with any password. That’s it.

One can either enable or disable the automatic downloads and installation of any app and operating system updates with the help of this preference pane. This is not really a big threat. But if your system is shared with anyone else and if the other person wants to harm you, he can take advantage of the vulnerabilities of your machine by disabling the automatic security updates.

By default, the App Store Settings are unlocked for the admin users. Still, to be on the safeguard, we advise all our readers to lock down all your system settings to make sure that no one else is playing with them.

It is high time that the Apple should consider its Quality Assurance process as recently Apple confirmed all Macs and iOS devices are affected by Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities. They should make sure that the updates are rolled out without any bugs, especially the ones which poses a security risk for the user.
