Signal standalone Desktop app for Mac, Windows, Linux

We had earlier reported that the Open Whisper Systems launched its Signal desktop app via Chrome browser back in 2016. The company is eventually introducing a dedicated desktop app for the private messaging service.

The company made the announcement via its blog post:

Signal Desktop is now available in a new, standalone form, and the Chrome App has been deprecated. If you’re a Firefox or Safari user, you don’t need to install Chrome to send and receive Signal messages on your computer. If you’re a Chrome user, having your browser open will no longer be synonymous with having Signal Desktop open.

It means that if you have been using the Signal app as a browser extension all these days, you can stop doing so by relying on the standalone app for the platforms such as Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 as well as macOS 10.9 and above.

The current users of the Signal app can export the data and then import it to the latest Signal Desktop app during the setup process. According to the company, all the conversations will appear in the same manner, “just like before”. The company is also seeking a feedback from the users in its forum on this latest availability. You may also use it to report the bugs in case if you are facing any.

For those of you who are not aware of the Signal app, it is a highly encrypted app. It means that all the outgoing and incoming messages are displayed consistently on all the devices that are connected. A few months ago in this year, the company had added the video calling feature to its iOS and Android apps.
