GIF images are ruling the conversations in the social networking world. It is very hard to find our Facebook newsfeed or Twitter timeline without an animated image. Most of these images play automatically without the consent of the users. While many like the autoplay feature of the animations, there must also be a few who do not like it. If you are one of them, you are in the right place right now. Here in this post, we are going to guide you on how to disable the autoplay of GIF Images on browsers.

Disable AutoPlay of GIF Images on Browsers

On Google Chrome

It is very easy to prevent GIF images from playing automatically on Google Chrome. All you will have to do is just install an Add-On called GIF Jam. Out of all the Add-Ons that are available for this purpose, we found this one very better.

On Mozilla Firefox

You can stop the GIF images from playing automatically on Mozilla Firefox in two ways. You can either choose to install an Add-ON or edit the browser settings manually to disable the feature. If you want to go ahead with the former, the add-on that will have to be installed is Toggle Animated GIFs. After installing it on the browser, you can enable/disable it by hitting the CTRL+M buttons.

Besides installing the aforementioned add-on, you can also disable the auto-play of GIF images by following the steps below.

  • Go to about: config and open the list by choosing ‘I accept the risk‘.
  • Type image in the search bar and Select image.animation.mode. By default, its value would be normal. Edit the value to ‘none‘.
  • If you ever change your mind and want to play the GIF images, just edit the value back to ‘normal‘.

On Opera

Just like Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome, you can prevent the autoplay of GIF images by installing the add-on on Opera as well. You will have to install a GIF blocker on your browser to get the job done.

On Safari

The recent Sierra update for the Safari browser has brought in a lot of changes to the browser including the preventing of videos from playing automatically. Sadly, the update does not stop the GIF images from playing and that’s why you will have to rely on an Add-On called Deanimator extension. However, the web extension has not been updated for the last 6 years and works only in the older versions of the browser. Unfortunately, there is no other way to stop the autoplay of GIF images than this on the Safari browser. You can also send videos in GIF format on WhatsApp.
