SwiftKey keyboard app adds transliteration support for more Indian languages

SwiftKey has added the transliteration support for Tamil language. One of the most widely used keyboard apps has already added the support for Gujarati and Hindi by the end of last year. It will still provide corrections and next-word predictions for both Latin characters and Tamil script which will let the people to type in a mixture of English and their local script without having to change the keyboard.

The support of Tamil transliteration will also add multi-script typing. It means that the users will be able to type in English with the help of Latin languages for multiple languages. For example, when a Tamil speaker who also uses Tamil and Hindi will be able to view the word namaskar in Hindi, Tamil and English at the same time.

The company is also extending its support for other languages such as Kannada, Telugu, Odia, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali and Punjabi and they are currently available in the beta version of the app. A few weeks ago in April, the rival Gboard app started supporting 22 regional languages in India besides the transliteration support for languages such as Telugu, Tamil and Hindi.
