Google to Open Source Chrome for iOS

Google is open sourcing Chrome in iOS. The company has made it public that the code for ‘Chrome for iOS’ is getting added in the Chromium project. The search giant also revealed that the due to extra complexity which is necessary for the platform, Chrome for iOS was separated from the Chromium project all these days.

There are certain constraints in the iOS platform. For instance, all the web browsers must be based on the WebKit rendering engine. According to the company, Chrome for iOS had to support not only WebKit rendering engine, but also Blink which is also an engine, that is supported by Chrome for other platforms.

Google also went on to add that the development speed will be quicker for tests of Chrome in iOS platform.

Google wrote in its official blog post:

Given Chrome’s commitment to open-source code, we’ve spent a lot of time over the past several years making the changes required to upstream the code for Chrome for iOS into Chromium. Today, that upstreaming is complete, and developers can compile the iOS version of Chromium like they can for other versions of Chromium.
