Netflix mobile user can now control cellular data usage

Netflix global provider of streaming movies and TV series has announced a new update on their website this morning. As, per the announcement Netflix mobile user can now control how much data does Netflix can use when users are accessing the service through their app. The new setting has been enabled called “Cellular Data Usage” for both iOS and Android applications. User can switch off the default setting which automatic and they can either choose a higher or lower data usage setting depending on their preference.

As, per default setting users stream around three hours of TV shows and movies per gigabyte of data which is equals to about 600 kilobits per second. So, Netflix did some testing on cellular network and found that the new setting balances good video quality with lower data usage without causing users to go over their data caps and thus suffering overage fees.

Netflix had previously announced to the press at Mobile World Congress 2016 that it would bring the data saver feature on both the iOS and Android application this year. And, obviously they have taken a notable step by providing this setting to their consumer as mobile data usage accounts for a decent portion in their streaming service today. As of April 2016, Netflix reported over 81 million subscribers worldwide, including more than 46 million in the U.S.

The new feature will be applicable only when user will be connected to a cellular network – the setting would not work if you are streaming over Wi-Fi or tethered.
