WhatsApp and Gmail now have 1 Billion active users

WhatsApp and Gmail are now part of the 1 Billion active users club. The companies announced on Monday that both Facebook’s WhatsApp and Google’s Gmail have 1 Billion active users every month.

Both the companies shared their new milestones around the same time. Alphabet made the announcement during the Q4 2015 earnings call followed by the Whats App’s news a few minutes later.

Gmail is not the first service from the family of Google to have achieved this mark. Company’s services like Search, YouTube, Android, Maps and Google Play achieved this feat earlier. According to Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, Gmail achieved the 900 million mark before last May.

Mr Pichai also said that around 10 percent of the replies in Gmail are done through the mobile app using the Smart Replies, a feature that allows you to automatically generate suitable replies by analyzing the received mail.

WhatsApp is anyways ahead than the Facebook Messenger, because while the former has attained the Billion mark, the latter has passed only just 800 million. However, Facebook can still be proud of WhatsApp’s achievement as WhatsApp was bought by Facebook for $19 billion in Feb, 2014. Although WhatsApp doesn’t generate any revenue out of its service to Facebook, this is certainly a big achievement for the company.

Before the acquisition of WhatsApp by Facebook, the service had around 450 million active users every month.

Next, we’re going to work to connect more people around the world and make it easier to communicate with businesses”, said Mark Zuckerberg in a post on Facebook. “There are only a few services that connect more than a billion people. This milestone is an important step towards connecting the entire world.
