Right now, the world is awaiting to get the hands on Virtual Reality, but the Microsoft is thinking a step ahead by launching RoomAlive for immersive augmented entertainment and holographic video calls.

RoomAlive is a proof-of-concept prototype that transforms any room into an immersive, augmented, magical entertainment experience. It presents a unified, scalable approach for interactive projection mapping that dynamically adapts content to any room. Users can touch, shoot, stomp, dodge and steer projected content that seamlessly co-exists with their existing physical environment.
According to the reports, Microsoft is in plans to use the RoomAlive technology to bring holographic video calls. It would work much like the Skype calls. But, instead of seeing callers in the screen, you will be able to see the hologram of the person who you’d talk to. It means you will be able to see the caller sitting on the couch in your house, walking across your house etc during the video call.
The technology depends on real time streaming, but the company is currently addressing the issues on the image depth and the resolution to bring in more reality to the video calls. We can also expect the company to use the same technology in the space of games. So, sooner or later, you will be able to meet the stars of your favorite game in the real world.
The building blocks of the RoomAlive technology are projector-depth camera units, which can be combined through a scalable, distributed framework. The projector depth cameras are awesome enough to self-localize and build a unified model of the room without any user interference.
