Apple marked its first official step in Virtual Reality by hiring a VR expert

Apple marked its first official step in the world of Virtual Reality. The company has just announced that Doug Bougman, a renowned VR/AR specialist has joined their Virtual Reality team.

“Doug Bowman is a computer science professor and Director of the Center for Human-Computer Interaction at Virginia Tech. He is the principal investigator of the 3D Interaction Group, focusing on the topics of three-dimensional user interface design and the benefits of immersion in virtual environments. Dr. Bowman was the lead author of 3D User Interfaces: Theory and Practice, and served as the general chair of the IEEE Virtual Reality Conference in 2007-2008,” according to his academic profile.

Dr. Bowman’s academic profile also states, “He received a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation for his work on 3D Interaction, and has been named an ACM Distinguished Scientist. His undergraduate degree in mathematics and computer science is from Emory University, and he received his M.S. and Ph.D. in computer science from the Georgia Institute of Technology.”

We had earlier reported that 2016 is going to be the year of Virtual Reality. The coming months will see the launch of Virtual Reality devices like HTC’s Vive, Sony’s PlayStation VR and Facebook’s Oculus Rift. Samsung has already made its VR device, Gear VR Headset available in the market. Besides that, considering its efficiency to run on battery, Microsoft’s HoloLens is all set to blow our minds as we will be able to use it for 5.5 hours on a single charge.

Last week, Google has appointed Clay Bavor to lead the company’s Virtual Reality team alone. In the wake of all these reports, Apple’s move on hiring a new VR expert isn’t surprising. In fact, I would say that Apple should have done it long ago in last year. However, it is better late than never.
