Secret Conversations in Facebook Messenger & How to use it?

Secret Conversations

The ‘Secret Conversations’ feature in Facebook Messenger is now available for all of its 900 million users. Facebook had brought in end-to-end encryption in its Messenger app back in July and the ‘Secret Conversations’ feature was rolled out only to a limited number of users in the beginning. However, the company kept on adding users again and again as the time went on.

If you are not aware of ‘Secret Conversations’ feature, it is something that makes use of end-to-end encryption in your conversations in Facebook Messenger and they are very secure. The normal conversations in your Messenger app are not end-to-end encrypted. Anyways, the company has stated that adding encryption ends a lot of useful features such as money transfers, GIF sharing, inline video playback and chat bots.

The ‘Secret Conversations feature’ relies on the Signal protocol which was first implemented by the Open Whisper Systems in the Signal app. It was later used by WhatsApp and Google Allo.

How to start a secret conversation in Facebook Messenger?

  • Open the Facebook Messenger app in your Android or iOS Smartphone.
  • Now, open any conversation with whom you want to initiate a secret conversation and the tap information icon in the top right corner.
