Trending topics in Facebook is now automated

Trending topics in Facebook is now automated. All these days, the company relied on a few editorial staffs to write descriptions for the topics that trend on the social networking site. According to a report by Quartz, the entire editorial staff who used to take care of the trending posts have been fired. They comprised of around 15-18 members. But the company has however said that there are still a few people on board to ensure that the highest quality topics appear in the trending section.

The latest update in Facebook allows you to see the trending topics in a word with hashtag or a single word. It also shows the number of people who are talking about the topic. The display of the topics depends on the number of posts shared in Facebook, your location, the pages you have liked and trending topics across Facebook.

Facebook said in a statement:

Our goal is to enable Trending for as many people as possible, which would be hard to do if we relied solely on summarizing topics by hand. A more algorithmically driven process allows us to scale Trending to cover more topics and make it available to more people globally over time. This is something we always hoped to do but we are making these changes sooner given the feedback we got from the Facebook community earlier this year.
